How to Install Acoustic Wood Panels
A simple step-by-step guide for a clean, professional finish.
Acoustic wood panels combine natural wood slats with a sound-absorbing felt backing, adding warmth, texture, and better acoustics to any room. With the right prep and mounting method, they install cleanly for a polished, professional look.
Before you begin, make sure your wall is clean, dry, and free of obstructions — these panels are designed for indoor use only.
Tools & Materials You'll Need
Before starting the installation, prepare all necessary tools and materials.
Essential Tools
- Measuring tape & spirit level
- Pencil or chalk line
- Circular or hand saw
- Sharp utility knife
- Construction adhesive
- Caulking gun
- Safety glasses
- Work gloves
Optional Tools
- Black drywall screws & screwdriver, for screw mounting
- Wood battens & mineral wool insulation, for maximum sound absorption
- Stud finder, to check for hidden wires or pipes
Important: Acoustic wood panels are designed for indoor use only — avoid installing in bathrooms or other high-humidity areas.
Step 1: Prepare the Surface & Find the Center
A clean, level wall and a well-planned starting point make everything after this easier.
- Wipe the wall clean of dust, grease, and debris
- Remove any old screws, nails, or obstructions so the surface is even
- Make sure the surface is completely dry
- Use a stud finder to check for hidden wires or pipes before drilling
- Measure the wall width and mark the exact center point
- Starting from the center keeps the panels at both outer edges even, rather than leaving a thin strip on one side
Tip: Mark your center line with a level to keep the entire installation straight from the very first panel.
Step 2: Choose Your Method & Gather Tools
The right mounting method depends on your wall — pick yours before you start.
Adhesive only
Best for smooth, painted drywall up to 8 ft. The fastest option, no drilling needed.
Adhesive + brad nails (recommended)
Glue the panel, then nail into studs (16" on center) through the felt between slats for a secure, long-lasting hold.
Screws through the felt
Drive black screws between the slats — ideal if you may want to remove the panels later.
Furring strips
For uneven, brick or concrete walls. Adds depth and maximum sound absorption.
You'll need: tape measure, level, pencil, stud finder, fine-tooth saw or utility knife, fine-grit sandpaper, construction adhesive with caulk gun, brad nailer or drill.
Tip: Unbox your panels and let them rest in the room for 48 hours before installing, so the wood adjusts to your home's temperature and humidity.
Step 3: Measure and Mark Your Layout
A few minutes of planning now means a straight, even result later.
Find your center point
Measure the width of your wall and mark the horizontal center with a pencil. Starting from the middle keeps the panel pattern balanced on both sides, even if the wall isn't a perfect width for whole panels.
Draw a level guideline
Use a spirit level or laser level to draw a straight horizontal line at the height you want your panels to start. Every panel edge will follow this line, so take your time here.
Dry-fit before you commit
Lay the panels out on the floor first, or hold them up against the wall, to check the pattern, spacing, and how the final row will look. Adjust your starting point now rather than after adhesive is applied.
Tip: Mark stud locations lightly in pencil now if you're using screws or battens — you'll thank yourself in Step 4.
Step 4: Cut Panels to Fit Your Wall
Most walls need at least one panel trimmed to size — here’s how to get a clean cut.
Measure twice, mark once
Measure the remaining space at the edge of your layout and transfer that measurement onto the panel, marking your cut line clearly where it’s easiest to see.
Smooth the edge
Lightly sand the cut edge with fine-grit sandpaper to remove any rough spots, so the trimmed panel sits flush against its neighbor once installed.
Tip: Save your offcuts — they’re perfect spacers for keeping slat spacing consistent in Step 5.
Step 5: Install and Space Your Panels
Now it's time to bring your layout to life on the wall.
Start from your center line
Press or fasten your first panel along the guideline you marked in Step 3, working outward toward each edge of the wall for a balanced, symmetrical result.
Keep spacing consistent
Use a thin offcut as a spacer between each panel to keep the slat pattern lining up evenly from one panel to the next, even across seams.
Check as you go
Step back every few panels to check alignment and spacing from a distance — small gaps are much easier to fix before the adhesive or screws are fully set.
Tip: Install one full row at a time rather than working panel by panel up the wall — it’s easier to keep everything level.
Step 6: Style and Enjoy Your New Wall
Your panels are installed — now it’s time to bring the space together.
Let it settle
If you used adhesive, avoid leaning furniture or decor against the wall for at least 24 hours while it fully cures.
Add layered lighting
A sconce, pendant, or hidden LED strip along the top edge brings out the texture and shadow lines of the slats after dark.
Style with a light hand
A console table, a few vases, or a single piece of art is usually enough — the panel itself is the statement, so let it breathe.
Tip: Snap a few photos in natural daylight — it’s the best way to spot any gaps or misaligned panels while they’re still easy to fix.
